This film is about a child who gets a new step father who come in to his home and abuses him right under his mothers noes and the only person that child can turn and run to is his biological father who doesn't live with him no more. This film is similar to our film in many ways , by it deals with the same issues , child abuse. It also has similar characters , lonely , abused child. So through this film there are a lot of things i can learn to help aid my film

Poster Ideas 1

The are our poster ideas we came up with. We had a breif for there posters which was
  • It Had to show Happiness and loneliness
  • May to consist of a fist
  • "Monster" had to be at the top in child style hand writing
  • the tag like had to be on the poster
  • and it must have black on the poster .
this is what we made from that brief, (mine is the 1st one )

Editing Log

This is our editing log we created to help us know , who has been coming in to edit and what they got done. This is very important because it means all 3 of us do not have to editing at the same time , and when someone does come in we know what stage of editing we are at. it also shows what problems we encountered and this will help us in the future when we encounter the same problems to get over them

Shooting Schedule

This is our shooting schedule. A shooting schedule is used to plan out what sots you are doing throughout the day , it helps you manage your load better and doesn't let you forget anything. the shot do not always have to be done in chronological order , and this shooting schedule shows this, you do all the same shots in one location and then you move on to the others.

FINAL STORY BOARD

This is our final story board , after receiving feedback on our initial story board saying that it is too shot ,and shot were too long and there were not cut away shots , and action reaction shots we then added all of our missing shots, along with more creative and interesting ones to make our final story board.

Photostory Board

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The Genre of our film is a Drama. This means that our film will share, challenge and develop codes and conventions from this particular genre, and other media products with the same themes.

Through extensive research that I have done on films with the same themes and in the same genre we found basic codes and conventions that would feature in our film.

Some of which was; that there is always a villain, there is always something bad/dramatic that happens in the film, most of the time there is a victim or some sort of innocent person within the film, usually the issue or bad event gets resolved or is concluded and it always follows a normal logical order. There are many other things which I will discuss in this evaluation.

Our film uses a lot of codes and conventions form the other media products in the same genre as ours, one of which an innocent character. A.I is a film that shares this common code and convention or an innocent young character, this character is portrayed through a little robot boy who just wants to be loved by his mother, just like Lilly in our film who says “I Love him, he says he loves me too”, talking about the monster who is actually her father. The character in A.I is very lonely and goes through the whole film being around people who don’t really know him, which is similar to our character who have two friends who don’t know that her dad her abuses her at home, the boy only has one companion in the shape of a super toy but that super toy is separated from him leaving him again on his own. Which is just the same as out character Lilly who says “ even when my friends leave me I’m not scared there are many , long shots , mid shots , and close ups showing Lilly alone in the park representing her as and innocent lonely character and again she is shown in this light when she enters the class room and no on talks to her when she enters late or even says hello , and she sits at the front of the class on her own and she is the only student in the class who has no one to talk to . Also when the teacher says they will be doing a “fun writing task” a track shows her not joining in with the moaning in which every single one of her class mates partake in.

One of the codes and conventions of a Drama is that it consists of realistic characters and I do believe that our film has used real life characters similar to the film La Haine. The characters used in La Haine are not glamorous , extremely good looking , crazy rich but they are normal everyday characters that you probably pass by on the street, what makes them more real is that they are just a common every day , average Joe.

Eastnders is another real media product and is also a drama, which uses real life characters such as working class, middle class and lower class characters throughout each episode. Realistic characters can be seen through local business man Ian, or the Jackson family who is classed in the lower band of society because they are on benefits. All these mentioned can be seen as real life characters as they are like mirrors to the audience because it is showing them what they see everyday. Characters like this are used to appeal to about 90% of the audience who are just like the people they are watching on the screen and for that reason alone it makes it that much more appealing and that much more realistic. So like La Haine and Eastenders we have use realistic characters such as a school girl and seeing how the majority of people in the UK have gone through some sort of schooling, or see school children on their travels, they are able to identify this character as a real life person. Also our target audience is a young one, that of school age or not too far from just left some sort of education, so characters like this is really appealing to our own target audience. Also Lilly has 2 close friends who she hangs out with, which so many people can relate to, many adults only have 1 or 2 close friends, in schools kids may have many friends but only a select few they are close with like our character, so people are able to watch this film and put themselves in the place of our character which makes it that much real for them to experience and make the film more personal and dramatic for the individual.

Our film deals with real life issues which is also a code and convention of a drama and by using realistic characters it makes it that much easier to represent those issues. Many films have real life issues at their core but la Haine was a very controversial film because it was the 1st time in the history of French cinema that the police were to be shown in a bad light. La Haine dealt with police brutality and our film deals with child abuse. Just like Domestic Disturbance deals with the same issue. Domestic Disturbance is about a stepfather who abuses his new step son, but the mother is too blind to see, so the son tells his biological father who the later deals with the step father. Although this film takes a more of an action approach to represent this issue it still tackles it just in a different way to our film. This is another code and convention that our film has used of other films in the same genre to tackle or deal with real life issues.

Another code and convention our film also adopts from its genre is that our film consists of a villain/ bad character or a negative event. Just like the film Kidulthood which deals with many issues such as; teenage sex/pregnancy, violence, gun and knife crime, youth crime, bullying, drugs, gangs and school life. This film also has a defiant bad event caused by a constant villain throughout the film. Sam who is an older character to the other main characters in the film (just as Lilly’s father is to her in our film) bullies them consistently throughout the film, and even in a place where they should feel safe and secure, their school, just like Lilly who says “I don’t know why he treats me so”, because “there should be love and comfort at home”

Our film also develops certain codes and conventions of other film in the same genre. Drama films usually present the film through an audience or general view, making them feel like a spectator, and they do this through a series of event. We have too that idea a developed it into our own, we told the story from Lilly’s point of view and used a voice over to do so. Instead of just showing the audience the events we had Lilly narrate her story that she was writing and that lead to her describing what we saw on the screen. This technique is also used to connect the audience with the character and make them feel like they are in the story them self as the character is talking directly to them; it makes the story more personal to the audience. This technique has been used a few times in films such as; Sin City, Fight Club and Badlands, all 3 of these films are very successful in using a voice over and we believe our film is also. Even though it is not typical to do so in a drama we chose to take the dialogue and develop it into a voice over.

Flash backs are also not a typical codes and convention in a drama but instead of just showing a series of event running in order we chose to develop that idea and show flash backs instead this was also added to assist with the voice over. This is similar to the film Butterfly Effect, where the whole film is made up of a series of flash backs each time the main character reads an entry from his diary. This also worked very well in Slumdog Millionaire. And I believe it has worked very well for our film.

Our film doesn’t have a set middle beginning and end like most film. Unlike most of the dramas that have a set up, disruption and a resolution our film doesn’t follow that set pattern. This is similar to the film 16 years of Alcohol, which starts with the main character being beaten up , then the rest of the film is made up of flash backs leading up to that event. Like our film which has a beginning then a series of flashback and then it takes you back to the beginning and then there is a powerful and abrupt ending.

Along with developing and using codes and conventions of other media products within our Drama genre we also challenge them.

One way we do so is by leaving the story unresolved. This is not only going against the codes and convention of drama films but this is actually going against the codes and conventions of most films. This is a very similar style to Ken Loach who most of the time leaves his films unsolved or unresolved to enforce the issue of what he is trying to portray on his audience, just like in My Name Is Joe, where the two characters who had fallen in love do not get back together and another character hangs himself (Liam).

The reason we have done this is to reinforce our theme, the last thing they see is Lilly being abused, which stamps our theme in their mind because they are still emotional, and upset at the end of our film, raising awareness of our theme which will linger on in their thoughts.

Another way we disobey or challenge the codes and convention of our genre is by leaving the audience confused right up till the end when you see her father drag her away. This is different because of the way we have chosen to tell the story most dramas give you the full picture straight away and deal with it, we don’t give you the picture because they way we chose to tell the story , through Lilly, meaning we only let the audience know what we want them to know until the end.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Various types of media technology were vital in the planning, research and evaluation stages of my work.

The internet was a very important form of technology to help us with all three stages. When we were asked to come up with an idea for our production in the 1st place, we found our self routing through several websites, such as weird and crazy stories, interesting facts, newspaper websites and a lot more, from this stemmed the back bone which would form our final out come. Also a lot of research for each individual part of production was important, I used the internet to help inspire more interesting lighting through my cinematography research, I found more interesting ways of opening my film through research I done on soul bass, I even realised how important posters were when researched 3 different posters for the same film and found specific connotation which appeal to audiences. All this I learnt, and researched with the aid of the internet. When we were watching films on the internet for ideas they were all free to watch, but if the internet was not available to us we would of had to buy or rent the films which would have wasted time and money and we wouldn’t have been able to as watch as many films as we did, which would have limited ideas.

Photo shop was used this year in the making of our posters and also used to join together my mood board. Using Photoshop allowed us to create a more professional and real poster which will appeal better to our target audience. It also didn’t limit our creative minds when thinking of ideas to include in our final poster.

Photoshop was also instrument in producing our mood booards and through this we were able to portray a clearer picture to our audience of what our film was about. If we didn’t have Photoshop and we used another programme like paint it wouldn’t look as professional as our work ended looking.

We used a Cannon HD camera also, now by doing so I helped (like Photoshop) to create, a more professional and overall better final production. This camera along with the tripod allowed us to capture many more interesting, shot movements, angles, and types with out cheapening the quality. It is also a HD quality Camera and with all new television being made in HD it really helped us keep up with the times. Also using the camera to record straight onto the tape made it that much easier to just upload all our rushes and being editing our production, and with every thing being digital we were able to upload our film easier and the computer was able to read it with no problems. We were able to perform non liner editing because of the tape were able to cut easier in between shots. Also that fact that the camera records in digital and not straight on to a reel of film also helped avoid problems that would other wise have been there, such a portability. We were able to move around fairy easily with our camera, tripod and small tape, all this made changing shot angels, position of the camera and even scenes easier and more time efficient, which was instrumental in keeping our filming within two days.

Blogger. This provided us with an interactive log where we could display our work for every one to see and of course this will have it benefits. such as, making it easier to get feedback from our peers and teachers, it also allowed us to access from home so we could always update our work wherever we are, it allowed us to place findings from the internet directly onto the blog and it laid a platform down for us to present our work to the examiners marking us.

This also aided us in receiving message form our teacher by viewing the department blog, any work they would set us would always be accessible from anywhere in the world. Blogger was an excellent communication device not only for our teachers but for our group too, if we didn’t have blogger, the project would have moved much more slower and it wouldn’t be clear to everyone what was going on, because if you missed something important you could always go a check upon what it is you needed on the blog.

Other new media technologies such as Face book, Twitter and My space has helped me in using a blog as it is not that different from all three, and by me using these social networking sights has made me automatically more familiar with the blogger sight that much more and made it easier for me to navigate around it and operate through it. Also MSN Messenger was used to communicate with our group outside school and to send links and ideas to each other that we have found and to update each other on work, this really helped for the communication within our group.

Also the on screen projector was also very important for feedback on all our products made in this project , poster , film and review, we were able to receive feedback from a mass audience at on go which save us time and it made it easier for them to see our products. If we didn’t use this we would have wasted a lot of time and our products may not have been to the standard that they are.

Another new technology was also introduced to us this year that wasn’t used in that last. Premier editing software was used in the editing of our work this year, again like other technologies mentioned it enabled us to create a more professional and high quality final product. this was accomplished with many new effects and features that wasn’t available on Avid last year, even though it was new to us , I got used to it very easily because the layout was similar to the previous software used but with more features.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Any sort of feed back is important in pre or post production, but when we receive feedback from our target audience that is valued very highly. This is because they are who we are producing our film for and if the like, understand or believe something should not be included in our film, it must be removed, improved or made clear immediately.

1st we pitched our initial idea of the story of the Red Rose Killer, which is about a serial killer confessing to his crimes to one family member of each of his victims on his death bed. After we pitched this idea we got a lot of feed back, they said that was no character motivation to confess, why would anyone sit there and listen to a man who just killed their relative, the story had no middle, how would we show flash back, how would we establish the difference between the past and the present, the story was too predictable, it had no logical causality and there was too much dialogue. They also said that that we had a very good narrative idea but it was just a matter of tying up a many loose ends that is the problem. After reviewing all this feed back, we learnt to correct all these things and other feed back we have received on this pitch, that it would make our film longer than 5 minuets which was our limit, and there was a lot of things against us, like creating a believable hospital scene, making a teenager look like and elderly man and creating a realist past look in the flash back. From this feedback I learnt that we have over complicated things, with the location, setting, dialogue and even the story line. So we decided to change out idea to a much simpler one.

So we changed our story to Monster. This was about a girl that had to write a fictional story about a fear. But what it actually turns out to be is a fictional account of her life but hidden in her story, she describes a monster who is actually her father. We got a lot of positive feed back from this and many suggestions about how to show up set in contrast to her happy times. Such as that they liked the way the story is constructed, as you don’t know what she is talking about too the end, then found it interesting and they thing they would be kept thinking throughout the film, the also said that it has a strong good message in relation to child abuse, and if we got it right it could be a very powerful film. We also got called up upon two things where would be find somebody for our climax when she is hit and where are we going to get someone to play the lead role well. We learnt a lot from this feed back, which was that simpler ideas are easier and can be more effective. We also found from our criticism that we had to chase up the drama department in our school to propose suitable actresses who we would later audition to play the role.

We scripted our story and it was very short, not with much dialogue between characters just between the teacher speaking to the class and Lilly’s voice over. This made our script short and simple. The feedback we got from this was very positive, they said that it is good because it is short and the voice over will be really good with telling the story as it allows us to focus on what’s going on, they also said they like the was we don’t waste time before we get into the story of our film .But the only thing we were asked to improve was to describe the flashback in the actually script. What I got from this feedback is that lay out every detail because it is better to over plan that to not plan enough and by doing so it helped us a lot in the actual production when we were filming and even editing we knew which piece of sound matched the action on camera.

We then had to set the mood for our film by collecting images that will display the themes and set the mood for our film. So we went to collect a series of images and made a collage. And the feedback we received was that it only showed one side of our film , the bad side , the child abuse side , the nasty side and that is not what our film was all about there were some happy times like in the class room in the park with her friends. They said, “I Thought parts of your film was happy and that she has some friends what’s happened to them. What I learnt from this is that you have to hear your story form more than your own point of view the way I may seem things is different from the way my target audience sees things, so with this in mind , we made another collage. This one got a lot better reception.

After this we then did drawings of the world of our film after learning about cinematography. We were asked to draw up 2 scenes from our film exactly how they would look in our actually film. When I received the feedback it was that it was very good for the one in the park because the bottle was in the water just as it was in the script and the girl was in the park and the scenery was good, but when I presented the picture of Lilly in the classroom it received criticism, mostly saying that it looked very plain and that the classroom should have some sort of decoration or posters of some sort. From this I learnt no detail is too small and that everything in your Mise en scene is very important into making your final picture.

After we finished our story board we again pitched this to our class and teacher and they were able to give us a lot of feed back, a lot of it was positive but the main thing that was the problem is that there were hardly and cut away shots and action and reaction shots, after we received this feedback we redid our storyboard and again pitched to the class and it was met with no criticism. But what I took away from this feedback was the importance of these particular shots, which was to show all the action going on everywhere at a particular moment and to show the reactions of characters to the action of another. But I also came to understand that having too many shots is better than not having enough, even when it came to filming shoot a couple more shots extra will help when it comes to editing because you have more to pick form.

Whilst editing we was getting constant feedback every time we edited a scene.

So after we edited scene one we got feedback from our teacher and class and it was that many of our shots were too long and we were cutting back between many of the same shots, such as the shots where the girls are walking in, we had the same scene just in different shots for too long, we also cut back to the long shot of the back of the class room and the track too often, making it very repetitive for the audience and very boring. Also we should switch the scene around so it goes from the teacher to Lilly then to the track of the class room.

We then made then made these changes and got further feedback which was that the mid shots of Lilly needed to be changed, we show the clock for too long, the sound needs to be fixed because it was too slow for the video and that they like the way the students look at Lilly as she comes in and they way the teacher gets the students attention. From this feedback I learn that you do not need to drag shots to make things clear to your audience they can understand just the same if the shot was 2 or 3 seconds shorter. It is better to use a variety of shots to show the scene not just the best ones you have and cutting between the same shots gets repetitive and boring, and an audience will not tolerate off sound.

So we then made these changes and played it to our classmates and teacher and received this feedback, our pace of our film needs to be established as we are going from fast to slow and it doesn’t match because the character is walking fast outside the class room and then there is nothing going on in the class room. From when Lilly enters the class room she sits down too fast it needs to be slowed down, we got questioned about the way we showed the girls walking in and the handheld shot we used made the film look like an action film , instead of using it we should use more normal and steady shots , and cut away shots. From this feedback I have learnt the value of cut away shots, it keeps the audience clued up as to what is going on else where and that it keeps them from getting bored. I have also learnt the way in which you edit can change the mod and the genre of the film, and now I know to be vigilant of this. And I have learnt even though a shot is a very good one , in terms of our hand held, it is not always fitting to the mood or genre of film you are trying to create.

So after making all these changes we then went on to scene two when Lilly enters the class room and the teacher sets them their work. After showing this to our peers and teacher , we got the following feedback ; That the bit before she walks in looks too much like a chick flick , change it if we want to get the representations of the character correct and create the right mood, there are no point of view shots of the teacher when she is talking, also that the continuity of her walking in and sitting down up till when the teacher talks is very good , and finally that the track shots were used too often and they seem to loose their meaning. From this particular set of feedback I learnt that continuity is a very important part of film and editing and when done well, it allows the audience to enjoy your work more, it always allows them to forget its a film and get more into it because when the start noticing things that are wrong, they will start to look for other things that are wrong also. Even though a shot is good and it does match the action on screen, over using it isn’t something that you want to do, because it doesn’t carry the same effect that is does only being used once or twice. I have also learnt that the audience always wants to see more than what you are showing them, they want to see all the main characters perspective and the reactions of those they are interacting with, so cutaway shots are very important along with point of view shots too.

So after making all these changes and showing our rendered version to our peers and teacher, we then went and edited scene three and the following is our feedback received; the distilled fad effect wasn’t needed and it shouldn’t be used, we should go back to the class room more often between the flash backs to remind the audience that she is still writing her story, the tilt from the leaves down to the girls is extremely long and shout be made drastically shorter, hearing the girls laughing through the music and the voiceover is very nice as it gives the audience a nice feeling , (even though we though to mute the sound out at this point), and we also need more dialogue to last the entirety of the scene because it becomes very boring and spacey otherwise. From this I learnt that things that I don’t think would be good in our film, need to be checked up on because as you can see the audience like and idea that we was going to remove in our film. I also learnt that there are ways to keep a good shot even though it is long you can make it shorter and it will still carry the same value that it did when it was longer. Also some effects although they look good are not always necessary to have. And finally planning skills should have been employed to realises that our voice over wasn’t long enough, so we should have recorded extra just in case.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Our Ancillary tasks were a Poster and a Magazine review.

The purpose of a poster is to promote the film before it is released so it will persuade people to go and watch it when it is. The poster cannot be dull or boring because that is not attractive and that will not lead to people going to watch our film. It must consist of colour, text and images, just like ours. Whilst laying out the blue prints for our poster we must keep in mind certain representations we want to portray and also themes which I think our poster did very well.

The purpose of a film review is to carry on promoting the film after it has been released. This is done by prestige critics watching the film, forming an opinion, making a judgement and then writing about it. How well a film does is dependent on how good a review it gets. But resting on the fact that our film is excellent the review will be good. And those who would read it will go and see the film if they haven’t already.

The film and the poster worked really well together because the poster really portrayed issues that will be highlighted in our film. Such as something dark and bad (monster) represented by the black back ground, and the door slightly being opened as if something or someone is creeping into the room. Happiness is also portrayed as you can see the girls smiling, in the foreground whilst on a colourful round about, through this you can also see the loneliness in the main image where the two friends are seated on one side and our main character is all on her own. All these things shown in the posters are very dominant in the film. The poster also gives clues to possible settings of the film; there are leaves at the top in the foreground and a tree which makes up a boarder featured in the poster, which suggest some sort of green area or a park which is in our film. Also at the top of the poster the title Monster which is written in children hand writing matches the opening sequence of the film and the whole story line because she is writing her story while she is telling it. This along with the girls in uniform gives and idea that this film has something to do with or set in a school. All these things put together seem quite random and maybe confusing, just as our film is right until the end. The poster promotes the film very well it makes the viewer curious and influences them to go and see the film. And if they were to view the poster again after watching the film they will see everything on the poster makes sense and is there for a reason, and has a direct link to the film. Plus our 3 poster we created all go together and have a house style. As they all clearly link to our film they all clearly link to each other. This is recognised by having a black background consistently through all of our posters, our main character always in the foreground, we also have the title written exactly the same throughout, our tag line is consistent through each 3 posters and the trees and leaves are always featured in the each of the poster. This gives the posters a house style and links them in with each other, even if the title wasn’t on each of them you could still tell they were of the same film.

Our film review works to promote our film after it has been released.

We mimicked the Lay out of Film Magazine to make it look professional and real. Our film is also reviewed on the same page as the best new films out at the moment; this means that our film is one of them. So when someone is talking about good film, monster will get a mention. Also the 4 and 3 star ratings that it has received from the times and empire promote the film really well because people who respect the critics opinion will be drawn to the film .also our film is at the top of the review page with the largest picture, showing that it is the highest rated film on that page over a lot of other top films, this sells the film very well. The description about the film is very enticing and would make anyone want to go and watch the film if they haven’t already. Certain quotes would keep the reader interested and make them want to see the film more “ all she is scared of in this world is a monster” the review also asks questions that can only be answered by watching the film.

But the posters job isn’t done when the film has been released , it still aids the film review in promoting after the film has been released various other posters can be brought out , maybe to appeal to different audiences in different countries.

Collage 2

After we got our feedback from the last collage we made this one , as you can see in contrast to the other one , this shows a lot more of her happy times , with more colours and more images with her not alone, along with showing her , lonely and sad , so both of our contrasting and dominant themes are represented in this collage

Tuesday 8 December 2009

This is our final film review page that we made, a lot of research and development went into making this. We used a popular and real film review magazine called Total Film as our template.

We did this to make our review to look more realistic and and professional. As you can see our film review is on the same page as very popula films that are right now , making it look like a very popular.

These are 2 film review pages from the Magazine total film as you can see our film review page and these 2 look very similar.

Addition To voice over

After watching our film with the voice over we had recorded and added we received feedback telling us that the lack of voice over was too much in between shots and scenes, so we got our cast member back in again to record a longer version, which then improved our final product.

There are not many things that I am scared of there are actually many things I enjoy, like swinging on the swings, and going round on the Mary go round, I love my friends Emily and Zoey and I know they love me too, we have so much fun.

We love going to the park, and lying in the grass, we could laugh all day long. I love going to the park its better than going home.

I’m scared of spiders I’m not even scared of ghost, even when my friends leave me I’m still not scared. The only thing that frightens me is a monster.

The monster I know isn’t like any other monster. He doesn’t live in my closet or under my bed.

He doesn’t only come out at night. I don’t really understand because I love him; He says he loves me. We still have fun too.
But playing hide and seek isn’t the same as before.

Because these days, if I lose the game, I lose sleep that night too.

I don’t know what to do, I’m so lonely sometimes

I know everything will be okay and the fear will go away,
Besides, the monster only comes out when the bottle is out.
But I’d still like to know why does he treat me so?

I’ll never be mad but I know there should be love & comfort at home.”

Monster script #3

(This is our3rd draft of the Script for our product. In this script we added a few more lines to beginning of the voice over, because on reviewing our own story board we found that the happy images , thoughts and flashbacks did not match what she was saying so we made these changes)

We see a shot of three girls hurrying to class (this is noted by the empty halls in the school and the fact that they are carrying books rushing) Right before Lilly goes into her classroom:

Lilly: Bye guys I’ll meet you after school. Same place as always!

Lilly walks into the classroom. Everyone looks at her and the teacher immediately tells her to sit down.

Ms. Harper: (Teacher gets up from her desk where she was busy doing something on the computer) Good morning class! I thought today we would do a fun writing activity.

Class: Awe (whiny, not waning to do it)- Lilly is seen and she does not participate in the whining.

Ms Harper: Now, now kids I mentioned it would be fun, so there is no need to panic. I want you to write about what you are most afraid of. It can be fictional or non-fictional. (A cut to a kid raising his arm, very eagerly) Wait Mathew let me finish then I’ll help you.

I am leaving that for you to decide. Say for example, if I were to write about my worst fear I would write about giant spiders attacking my house! (laughs) Anyway, get started now and you have until the end of the lesson, if you don’t finish it’s homework! (Sounds of the class whining again)

(The focus will start to go towards Lily. Due to an over the shoulder shot, we can start to see what she is writing. Her first written words are “I don’t have many things I’m scared of. There are actually many things I enjoy. (In the midst of that sentence the narration starts and there is a slow fade to three girls playing the park on swings, they are laughing and playing but the voice over covers up the sound from the park) There is a fade back to the classroom of Lilly writing.

Lilly(V.O. narration):” I’m not scared of spiders. I’m not even scared of ghosts. The only thing that frightens me in this world is a monster. (There is fade to Lilly walking along a fence and dragging the stick along the metal bars.)
The monster I know isn’t like any other monster. He doesn’t live in my closet or under my bed. He doesn’t only come out at night. I don’t really understand because I love him; He says he loves me. We still have fun too. (Fade to Lilly sitting on the ground in the park with her knees to her chest and her eyes covered with her hands. She uncovers her eyes and looks around, but there is no one there)
But playing hide and seek isn’t the same as before. Because these days, if I lose the game, I lose sleep that night too. I know everything will be okay and the fear will go away. (Fade to Lilly laying on the grass with a flower in her hand. She is laying on her back looking up at the flower as well as the sky. There will also be a POV shot of the sky at this point)
Besides, the monster only comes out when the bottle is out. (A fade of Lilly at the park watching an alcohol bottle float by in the pond. )
(We are now back in the classroom scene.)
But I’d still like to know why does he treat me so? I’ll never be mad but I know there should be love & comfort at home.”

As she finishes writing the essay. She puts down her pen and looks up. She is looking straight at the camera when she shuts her eyes. We then have sudden scenes of the film running backwards in about 5-10 seconds as there is a anticipating sound playing. We then have a mirage type scene where We are zooming into Lilly yet tracking backwards at the same time to create a "different world" feel. We cut to a black sillhouette shadow of a man raising his hand and then we hear Lilly saying "Daddy, No"(-The last scene will be very discrete and dark, the man will not be fully shown therefore we will not see his face, yet everything comes together at this point as it is clear who the monster really is.)

Monster script #2

(This is our2nd draft of the Script for our product. In this script we changed a few things which made it longer due to feedback , we got asked to add in the stage directions of what our characters would actually be doing when the are on camera, this would make it a lot more clear when actually filming. We also wanted to establish our main charcter and her friends who will be seen later on the park)

Monster Script
Draft #2

We then have sudden scenes of the film running backwards in about 5-10 seconds as there is a anticipating sound playing. (-The last scene will be very discrete and dark, the man will not be fully shown therefore we will not see his face, yet everything comes together at this point as it is clear who the monster really is.)

These are the film posters with a similar story or that consist of some sort of child abuse.

What is the purpose of a film review?

Film reviews are vital to any film, this usually decides how well a film does after it is produced. It is used to let audience know what is out there and what is good and what isn’t. The job of a good film review is to keep promoting the film after it has been released just as a poster would promote the film before its release.

Film Critic:
What is the purpose of film reviewing?

Monday 2 November 2009

The main colours used in this posters are black and Red. Red is the most eye catching colour , and it has been proven by scientific research has been used to prove this. But in this poster the red and orange has been used through fire to represent danger and action , and anybody who likes action films or danger in films will be drawn to this poster and may feel to find out more about this film. The womans hair is even red which shows that she is a dangerous and the gun helps with this connotation.

The black on the woman connotaes some sort of mystery and it has alot of sex appeal for the male viewers of this poster and some men alone my go and see the film just to see this woman in it.

The woman is in the front of the frame in the middle third and she is the only person in the poster so clearly all the attention is meant to be upon her, and you can see throught the way she is dressed , the gun (which represents danger) in her hand and the location in where she is , that she has something to do with the militery of some special forces , and anybody who likes seeing these things in movies will be interested in this film. Like i said before the fire in the background represents some danger and action that will be in the film and fans of this genre of film will be interested in watching.

There are both visual and textual messages used in this poster , the visually messages give the connotations of sex appeal and danger and action . But the writing "Gi Joe" the fans of this show in the past will be keen on seeing this movie just to make sure thet they got things correct of just to see how the will translate the comics and the cartoons into a hollywood film.

I think this poster is trying to attract a young audience , around the age below 27 because people aged below this will be attracted to thi sort of film , because of the genre the colours and images represent.

Posters are meant to be persuasive , and all poster are intened for the same idea to attract a certain type of audience. But the way this posters is different is that it uses a woman to attract a male audience more to come see the film because it uses a "sexy" woman. Also the name of the film is very important because if you do not recognise the film you will when you see the name. And as i have mentioned before G.i joe is a very big Cartoon and comics for alot of adults and children, so just because this is called G.i joe people will go and see this film , thats why the name is writtern in big letters.

This Woman is used as a UPS. she is a famous actor who has been in several hollywood films such as dumber and dumber , Star trek and also feautred in 17 episodes of Alias. she also used to be a modle so people who have seen her and liked her in whatever she has done previously would be interested in watching this film.

The main colours used in this poster are Red green and black. The black represents some sort of mystery, which it’s on all sides of the poster; the green represents some sort of military force or peace and the red, danger and action. The green and the red are on opposite sides which represent some sort of good verses evil.

The title is an important symbol for the poster. This is because G.I.JOE is a very popular comic, action figure and TV in the past 2 decades and fans of any on the G.I.JOE products will be interested to see how their interest will be represented in a Hollywood blockbuster.

The characters are the main figures in the poster. The two men on either side are shown both frowning but in a different light, one has a green tint and the other a red one, representing good and evil. They are also dressed differently one in a suit and another in a generals outfit. As they are both the largest characters on the whole poster, this must mean they are very important or they have high authority over the rest of the characters.

There is also another character in the middle whose identity is unknown to us. This is very good at attracting a view because you want to know who he is, why we can see every body else’s face but his and why is he so important to be in the middle.

We also have another two characters but this time in the foreground , you can see they are both dressed the same so it looks like they are par of a team even though they take up opposite sides and they are holding their weapons in non threatening was making them look like good guys.

We also have another woman character directly in the middle to the bottom of the poster and in the background also, she looks like the baddie of the film as she has he weapons in a threatening position and she is screwing her face.

we see another character on the side of the general and smaller with a firing gun , showing that he is of high status but not as high as the general.

All these characters are interesting to the view because it looks like so much is gong on, attracting them to go and watch the film and what out what is going on.

Even though all posters have the same goal, the all achieve it in different ways. In this poster the way it is achieved is by using an individual character to appeal to different bits of the audience. The women characters appeal to men and boys because they are both dressed in tight out fights and are very good looking. Those good looking males appeal to the girls and the women in the audience. And the general appeals to anyone in the audience who is interested with military operations. They are also dressed in usual outfits which almost look futuristic. And the genre is clear shown thorough the images; this is an action film and anyone interested in watching action films will want to watch this.

Collage

Our film has many themes , but the two main themes are lonliness and child absue . So in finding the images I tried to find pictures that featured both. As you can see some of these images show a person alone and upset to show that they are going through their situation alone and have no one to turn to like our character lilly.
We also have some happy images that relate to the happy times she will remember when writing her story.

Cinematography Master Class- By Janusz Kaminsk (Begins at 5mins)

"Read the script - Digest the Story - Project your ideas through your own experiences".

Shindlers List
He said that it had to be made in black and white because all they knew from that time period came from black and white photography. This shows the research and the deep thought that goes into the cinematography process. because he said " it would be wrong to make it in colour" this just shows the care that he put into his work which i should feature in my own.It also shows how he want the audience to identify with the time period because if all they know from this time period is from black and white photography that will also be the case for his audience , so he is able to take them back in time just by simply using black and white.
now as for me and my film , if i want to make the audience feel a certain way or evoke a certain emotion , what i have do is think deep and do extensive research on how people see the key themes or my narrative now and in the past and play on them which will evoke real emotion from my audience , this can be done through the lighting, camera positions and movements and also the setting.

Saving Private Ryan
"25" minuets depicts the whole D-Day events of the invasion of Normandy in this film.
This just goes to show that time isn't an obstacle I should allow myself to get blocked by.
it also shows me how creative i should be because they connected some ammo to a drill and it turned out to look like a real machine gun from a POV shot ,shows the creativity that an individual has, because not only does it test the ability to create good and unusual ideas but to portray them on make others see what you see and make them feel how you want your audience to feel is the ultimate test of a Good cinematographer.
this video also taught me that cinematography isn't only to do with camera positions/movements, lighting and setting , but you can also slow down the speed of the frames to see how emotions and expressions form on actors faces or to see the process of certain important actions , which ill keep the audience gripped and very interested.

Minority report
in once scene he used his childhood experiences at the puppet shows to portray a scene in a certain way. he created a certain atmosphere with the use of cinematography to make his audience feel the way he wanted to feel.
From all the research i have done one cinematography , apart form the text book stuff, the one thing that has remained constant throughout cinematographers is that its a very personal thing.
one said that if you gave 5 cinematographers the same story , same script and the same actors that each one of them will make it look totally different from each others.
So i learnt from this that i have to add my own personal touch to our cinematography and almost like my signature on my work.

Munich
This film was about men who were involved in certain events getting killed off 1 by 1.
In this film "the camera became the hunter" and Janusk began to try new things like shooting reflections of people , shooting through windows ect.. which he admits was very hard but worth it .
with my cinematography i am going to have to think outside the box am and be a lot more creative with my ideas and think of things that break conventions of typical and basic cinematography.

The Diving Bee and the Butterfly
This film is about a man who has be paralysed all over except from one eye lid.
So Janusz started by covering one eye and seeing what he thought someone in that position would see and feel. now in my film i will have a lot of point of view shots , so i will need to put myself in the position of my character to what they are seeing ,where they will look , how they will feel how they would move , which all creates realism and it will great too.

I have learnt a lot from this video and plan to use a lot of what was said in my work.

Short video of Janusz Kaminsk

Cinematography

What is Cinematography ?
Cinematography in its simplest terms is having control over the Camera and the Lighting. but that is just the basics, as a cinematography you hold and important role in the whole film making process. ranks as highly as directors cinematographers have a lot of power and say in how each shot looks. Their role is to make sure that each and every shot is following the whole theme of the film by controlling the lighting and the camera, this will make the audience move to the emotions and feelings they are while watching a certain film, if the cinematography is correct.
Janusz Kamink , who is an cinematographer and has worked on ; Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, Shindlers List and Indiana Jones :the Crystal skull, said that cinematography is " a profession that allows you to show the world who you are" this means that the art of cinematography is a very personal one and different individuals have different ideas.

Art of Cinematography

Cinematography is classed as an art and likened to photography because it involves the manipulation of camera and lighting the only difference is that the images in cinema are moving instead of still. As two persons drawings of the same thing could never be the same , so can two cinematographers work never be the same, because it is down to the individuals own creative ideas that the camera is positioned or moves in this or that way or the lighting is like this or like that.

I have learnt a lot from this video above.
from other definitions I have read, Christopher Doyle makes it seem more of an art an creative and sometimes spontaneous thing. He said that cinematography is "Translating your ideas into images" this meant to me that all the ideas i have in my head of how i want to portray my film are possible on camera with the aid of mis en scene and the correct lighting and camera movements.
He also said that the "movements between the camera and the actors is a dance" a lot from that statement also , I took it to mean that I should be creative with my camera movements , like dance.I shouldn't limit myself to just still shots and boring pans or even keeping the camera on the tripod , maybe even try it hand held moving or following the actor and not having the actor to think about having to keep in frame which will allow them to act more freely and naturally.
Not only will the camera and the lighting help portray the themes I am trying to get across in my film , but the location plays a vital role as well because no matter how good my camera operations are or our lighting is if the location isn't correct it will not look good or represent what I am trying to portray.
"Why this story happens is because it happens here"

Monster - Treatment 1

This short film reveals the inner feelings and views of a world so much bigger than a girl can imagine. Her outlook on life has been simplified to common metaphors of a young child. However the deeper meanings behind the metaphors are more than some children could bare.
The story opens with the setting of a regular, every day classroom. The teacher gives the children their daily assignment. Today it is no regular assignment. They have been requested to write a short essay-fiction or non-fiction about their worst fear. The teacher jokes about how she is deathly afraid of spiders- therefore her essay would consists of giant spiders taking over her whole house! Lilly’s (main character) fear is a monster that she takes careful detail describing. She describes his actions and his ways- the reasons why she is afraid of him. Throughout her writing there are cuts/fades to Lilly wandering around the park alone. After school hours she’d rather roam the park finding things to occupy her time than go home. In her thoughts while she is at the park she plays on the swing set, kicks around an old found ball, lay in wonder in the grass. As the end of her story approaches it seems to become clearer of who the monster really is. This is reassured by the concluding sentence and the last shot of someone (her father) assaulting Lilly- this being done by a p.o.v. shot of her dad hitting her as she steps foot into the house.
This story gets inside the head and thoughts of a young child who lives in an abusive family. She has created a ‘monster’ in her head as to replace the actual abusive father who has caused her to think this way. The sadness of the main character has made it for the audience to be highly empathetic towards her experience. The entire purpose of the story comes together in the end when it all ends in a bang as the audience finds out that the monster is not an imaginary character in a book or a cartoon, yet an abusive father living in her very own house.

So Far...

This is our 1st In the form of a Power point Presentation the more detailed in our treatment. After we received our feedback and we analyse what was wrong and what we could change, we decided as a group that it would be in our best interest just to change the story all together , so we did . Above is our new treatment for our Film "Monster"

Red Rose Killer - Treatment 1

The story stars out as a clip based in olden times. This can be deciphered through the date on the bottom corner of the screen, as well as the granulled old style filming. The voice on the radio speaks of a third murder by the mysterious ‘red rose killer’ who leaves a red rose at the scene of his every killing. The voice on the radio also describes the targets as young, attractive women. As someone turns the radio off the scene fades into current day with the effect of granulled type film being taken off as well as the text ‘current day’ in the bottom corner being displayed. We are then seeing an older man distressed in his sleep. He is shaking and mumbling. At this time there are flashbacks of scenes of murder- this is to represent what the man is dreaming about. The scene cuts from the dream to reality a few times until finally the man wakes up. There is no diagetic dialogue as music covers the man’s voice. He picks up the phone dials a number and then speaks into the telephone (we cannot hear his voice). There is a cut to an analog clock. A fast forward affect of the clock turning quick lets the audience know a long time has past- even though it has only taken up a few seconds of the clip.
Afterwards, we see a women walk into the room. Her dialogue reveals that she is the man’s dead wife’s sister. They have not spoken since the death of Lily (sister and wife). The man seems to be in painful agony (coughing, speaking uneasy). He tells the sister that he has a confession to tell her. As he starts telling his story he pulls out a letter and describes it as the beginning of everything. There is a flashback of a woman writing this letter. His wife is the one writing to him to confess her unloyalty to her husband. She narrates the letter as she writes it, folds it up, and puts the letter on his pillow, followed with a red rose on top of the letter. The continuation of the film happens with a large amount of flashbacks and flash forwards into current time. The man confesses that he has killed his wife as well as 3 other women due to the rage and anger he had acquired from being cheated on. The clips of him killing the other women are tastefully shown with flashbacks of hints of killing and seduction. As the women he was after were unloyal women, just like Lilly. He confesses his killings to the sister. She is obviously very distressed and didn’t know what to think of it all. Before she has time to put her input into the tragedy of her sister and those women, the main character dies. She places one white rose on top of him as there was a vase with white roses next to his bed. This concluded the film with a quote from the bible talking about clearing away your sins, and red turning into white. “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”
Feedback
It wasn’t clear how we will show the difference between the past and the present.

From our pitch it wasn’t clear how his wife actually died from the way we described the death it sounded like suicide.

We wasn’t clear about how we were going to show the voice over the video

There were many little things we need to clear up in our story.

The way we explained it seems like it will most likely to run over 5 min, which is what we are limited to so that me a problem.

There seems to be nothing going on in the middle of our story, it sounds boring and may lead to our audience loosing interest.

When we pitched the our idea our feedback was positive on the beginning and the end of our story , our audience liked the way it linked with the two quotes and the fact that we had and old radio at they beginning a tv at the end showing the contrast in the time period.

There is not enough character motivation which will lead this man to confess this, and why would someone listen to a person who has just killed their sister it came across unrealistic.

They also told us that it would be hard to show the violence without making it looks silly.

When we pitched our idea, they said that some thing was lacking and they didn’t feel that the flashbacks and narration would be enough to carry the story.

Our story was perceived as too predictable, they wanted to see more of what drove him to this sudden confession and they wanted to see more of his back story and what lead him to religion, on student said that they felt they were hearing about the 2part to a film because so much of our main characters back story was missing. They wanted to see more of what lead him to religion and they want that transformation to be displayed.

Why would he call his sisters in law of all people to tell they story to, and why would she listen it doesn’t seem to make sense to our audience.
